Experimental Determination of Aluminium Density

The density of aluminium can be determined through various experimental methods. Here are two methods:

Archimedes’ Principle

This method involves measuring the buoyant force on a submerged aluminium sample to calculate its density.

Step Description
1. Weigh the sample in air Measure the mass of the aluminium sample.
2. Submerge in liquid Submerge the sample in a liquid of known density.
3. Measure displaced liquid Calculate the volume of the displaced liquid.
4. Calculate density Use the formula: Density = Mass / Volume.

A method for measuring metal volume:

X-ray Density Measurement

This technique uses X-ray diffraction to measure the density of crystalline aluminium.

Step Description
1. Prepare the sample Obtain a pure aluminium crystal sample.
2. X-ray diffraction Use X-ray diffraction to determine lattice parameters.
3. Calculate density Use the lattice parameters to calculate density.
